Hello, my name is Hope. I’m a 35year-old native of Detroit, MI with plenty of views regarding the influence of marijuana on my life and the lives of others.
Growing up in a middle class neighborhood, (I am really grounded!) it has always fascinated me as a child to wonder why I looked up to certain adults in my family that smoked marijuana. At the time I didn’t know any better, so I thought if they were smoking marijuana then it was ok, right, I guess. Needless to say, the people in my family that smoked marijuana didn’t seem to be “bad people”, they seem pretty normal, they worked and made a decent wage for a living and still lead productive lives. I would often find them taking a puff along with a glass of wine after along day of work to mellow out or unwind. Nothing lead me to believe that they were doing anything wrong other than enjoying themselves in their spare time. One day I went looking for my uncle, and found him inside the garage smoking his marijuana stick. He looked me in the eyes and told me, ‘if your going to smoke, get the good s@#t!.” To my surprise, I was expecting him to scold me for catching him. As a child I never saw any members of my family get in trouble for smoking a joint; however, at the time I didn’t know it was illegal.
When I became a teen, I began to see a different side of smoking marijuana. My peers started smoking marijuana and I began to become increasingly curious to know what the hype was all about. Many of my peers began to get in trouble with their parent, start skipping classes and becoming sexually active. I wondered, was it the marijuana influencing my peers to engage in these activities or was this part of growing up in the big city. I would tend to believe that if you are going through an adolescent stage along with dealing with peer pressure, raging hormones, zits, acne and then throw a joint in the mix, how can you function properly as a young teen. Wow! what a time to grow up ! In this day and age I couldn’t image being a teen with all the new stuff like: cyber bulling, the Perversion on cable, porn sites, drugs and alcohol.
One thing I know for certain, I will try to raise my children with the least amount of distractions as possible. It’s a must…stay tuned….(return to home)
